Matt Steele

Matt passed away early Sunday morning, peacefully. His family was with him. Please forward all his mail to:

Matt’s finally home with God. And for once, he’s hearing worship music that he can’t complain about.
I guess this is where we start to remember him fondly. Kevin Grose reminded me about Matt’s laugh. I will miss laughing with him. It was pretty sweet when we got laughing.

Chris– You were one of the first people I thought of when I received the news this morning. Know that you and Jade are in my prayers. Jim

Laughing with Matt was infectious. He had an incredible laugh to go with his keen, unique sense of humor. We were often able to get him going at band practices. He would regularly do Keith Richards impressions in between songs. They were spot on and always sent me into histerics. One of my all time favorite Matt memories is when he strapped on Kevin Rentz’s rather large acoustic bass and started singing Hester songs in a “vato” voice. Priceless.

i have no idea where to start. i loved matt dearly, even when he ticked me off
He was breathtakingly handsome, delightfully picky, always funny, consistently a popoff. I miss him so much. i have a constant slide show in my head of many, many great memories. what a gift.

matt was my hero. I remember when he first started coming around I was kinda jealous that anyone could be so dang nice and funny and talented… I left SB and in a way I kinda felt like matt filled in some of the empty spaces I left behind: at the Mothership, with my friends and even behind the kit at church. we got to work together when I started sending him freelance work from my job in Ventura. he was always so accommodating and helpful and professional and easy going. he mentored me in the web work – literally teaching me how to do stuff in Flash – showing me how to interact with clients – and finally how to make a go of it as a freelance designer. he did it right. I will miss you my friend.

Knowing that we will have a Film Festival and Cinema Society screenings without Matt breaks my heart. Hang in there, Chris!

Gabe & I spoke of his laugh as well, I re-read some journal entries from years ago where I had written down great moments with Matt when we would go to In/Out & then listen to music…I remember when I went to get his drumset at Mike’s, you are right about his being at peace. Love you Chris!

For the last 6 months or so of my office job at the Dr’s office, Matt and I would regularly IM throughout the day. He was always encouraging and always funny. I always looked forward to his insights on a book he was reading or a movie he’d just seen or an album he just um bought. Agreed, his laugh was priceless and one that usually was accented by restless hands and feet working out a rhythm. I also loved his drumming style, and always thought he was a Larry Mullen Jr. Jr. I miss you Steelio.

i had the benefit of knowing matt during that really unique and important season during which a guy looks to those around him to learn what it means to be a good man. i so am thankful to have known him.

i am going to miss a lot of things about matt. of his many charming idiosyncracies and talents, i’m going to miss his oral beat box. you know the one–the drum kit sounds he’d replicate from his mouth. leave it to a drummer (my dad converts a car dashboard into toms and cymbals!).
of all the white guys i know, very few (probably countable on one hand, perhaps even countable on one finger) do the beat box to begin with. and matt was actually REALLY good at it. no, i mean really REALLY good at it. in fact, one inspired recording session he actually laid down multiple beat box tracks on a song entitled “Scientist” . his oral tracks were ALL SO GOOD that it was really a challenge to figure out which ones were the best. GOD FORBID oversaturating a song with the human beat box. i’m really missing matt, beat box and all. only at chrismundell.com could i be graced with such memories. sometimes it’s funny the things we miss.
thank you, chris, for being such a great friend to matt and us all.

I just wanted to thank you, Chris, for the kind words and levity you brought to my cousin’s memorial service. It was heartening to see the depth and quality of life he shared with all of you.
